Learning Outcomes
SLO 1: Demonstrate scientific literacy by analyzing and interpreting physical geography data and comprehending scientific methodology and its limitations.
For this part of the student learning outcomes I analyzed and researched three different natural hazards. I did the Salton Sea for the hydrosphere. Earthquakes in Chile and the Drought in Los Angeles. I had to interpret physical geography data doing the research in order to comprehend and read the maps/or look for the maps that I needed. We had to read maps from three different scales. Local, regional, and global scales. It was very interesting to read those maps. You get a better sense of the problem in different scales and with the research I got a different perspective of the natural hazards. Learned why those natural hazards occur in those specific places and see the impacts that they have on those communities/places.
SLO 2: Demonstrate global literacy and awareness by analysis and interpretation of the complex global patterns and processes.
With the group, we created a pamphlet showing the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. As a group we had to exchange information and add so the project would come out together. We didn't only look specifically at one place, or at a single phenomena. We researched tornadoes, earthquakes & droughts.
SLO 3: Formulate geographic research questions and hypothesis to evaluate solutions to complex real world physical geography problems.
For this part of the student learning outcomes I researched the unusual earthquakes that are happening in places of the United States that didn't used to happen. After reading about the problem in depth, I gave my opinion and give some of the solutions that I thought would help to stop the problem. This critical thinking gave me an awareness of what is happening around me, why is happening and what can we do to help. It is amazing that (for example with the one I did) we humans are being the cause of the earthquakes happening in Oklahoma. Seismic activity that didn't used to happen.
Reflection of the Class
This was my first experience at taking a fully online class. It was very interesting because I needed to adapt to new ways of doing things. From this experience I thing I prefer to actually go into a classroom instead of me working on my computer. It is just a personal preference, because I really didn't had much trouble adapting to this class. I took a Geography class when I was in high school and taking this class now after a few years was a nice thing because I enjoy reading/viewing documentaries or articles about our planet earth. Some things I had forgotten but with this class I started remembering. I really enjoy to know about geography because by the simply fact that we live in this beautiful planet to know things such as how to locate a place in maps, what types of natural hazards occur in specific places and why, are a necessity to know. If this is our home, why not understand it. Reading maps was very crucial for this class, which I am glad I learned how to read them. I will take this knowledge with me in my future trips. All what I have learn in this class, specially for travelers, to know geography is very important. I am very glad I took this class.
Reflection based on the experience of the group assignment.
Because all of the past assignments for this online class didn’t require the need of other group members as much as this last one at first it was hard to have good communication. This was mainly due because its an online class and everybody connects at different times and not everybody has the same knowledge of canvas to know where to communicate. Nevertheless, due to that, this assignment helped me in many ways. Helped me in my communication, participation, and time management skills. Group projects require the participation of all the members in order to produce the work. If not everyone in the group participates more work is accumulated to the other members and it is not fair for the ones doing the work. Because the final grade of the assignment affects the group members too, I needed to communicate to my other group members to know what we were going to do and how. During the process it was important the participation because sometimes we needed the opinion of the others to know if what we were doing was right or not. Because it’s an online class and the times that I can connect to do the work vary, I needed to schedule with anticipation in order to have my work ready. What I would change is that, even though I finished on time. I know that I could have made some time to get to know my group members better. That’s what I would change. Not leaving things for last. Especially in-group projects because it doesn’t only affects me but the other members too. Next time for future projects I’ll have in mind that I need to communicate with the others ahead of time. If I do this, the organization of the future project its going to be more smoother for not only me but for all the group. In conclusion, this was a great assignment to test my abilities to communicate with others in order to produce the work.
